Warwick is a short run down the A46 from our yard in Kenilworth, and one of the areas we quote most often. Because it is close, a site visit rarely needs more than a day's notice and Guy can call back in later to check a detail without it turning into a scheduling exercise.
The town is a study in contrasts. Around Mill Street, Castle Hill and the streets inside the old town you find tight, walled gardens and courtyards behind historic buildings: beautiful spaces with almost no vehicle access. Emscote, Packmores and Warwick's Victorian terraces have long, narrow rear gardens with shared boundaries the full length. Woodloes Park and Chase Meadow are post-war and modern estate housing with open lawns, and Warwick Gates and Myton are newer still, with compact plots, builder-grade turf and thin token patios.
Those differences decide the work. In the old town it is a barrow job with careful material choice and precise levels. In Emscote it is fencing, paths and reclaiming a long thin garden into defined zones. On the estates it is a proper terrace, real lawn preparation and a driveway that copes with two cars.
The one constant is the ground. Warwick sits on the same heavy clay as the rest of the district, and near the Avon there are gardens with a genuinely high water table. Both make drainage design and sub-base compaction the deciding factors in whether a patio stays flat.

Every tonne of sub-base, sand and stone goes in by barrow and every tonne of spoil comes back out the same way. That is entirely doable; it simply has to be measured honestly and priced in from the start rather than discovered mid-job.
Historic building fabric needs respect. Old brick walls that a new patio abuts, thresholds barely above garden level, air bricks and damp-proof courses close to the ground: all of these cap how high a new surface can finish and dictate where water must be sent. Parts of central Warwick also sit in a conservation area, so a visible frontage may have material constraints worth checking before anything is ordered.
Water is the third issue. Gardens on the lower ground towards the Avon can hold water for long stretches, and the district's clay does the rest. Where a lawn is genuinely waterlogged, new turf on its own is money wasted; the ground needs regrading and, sometimes, drainage before turf is worth laying.
