Detail work
Cobbles, setts and stone laid where the finish is on show from the road.
Knowle is about twenty minutes from our yard in Kenilworth, and the work here is some of the most detail-driven we do. The village has a genuinely historic core along the High Street, a conservation area, and a housing mix that runs from timber-framed and Georgian property to substantial inter-war and post-war houses and modern executive plots towards Dorridge and Copt Heath.
That mix matters because material choice is doing more work here than in a modern estate. Cobblestones, setts, natural stone and clay pavers sit correctly against period brick and render in a way that a large-format modern slab often does not. On the newer properties towards Dorridge the opposite is true, and clean porcelain or sawn stone reads far better.
Gardens tend to be mature: established trees, thick hedges, brick boundary walls and layouts that have evolved over decades. Work here is usually about improving and reorganising rather than starting from bare ground: a bigger terrace, a rebuilt set of steps, a cobbled or paved parking area, a fence line renewed to a better standard.
The ground is heavy clay, with mature root systems throughout established gardens and level changes on plenty of plots. Both need looking at properly on site before a price means anything.
Cobblestone and sett work is more requested here than almost anywhere else we cover: front driveways and parking areas, aprons at gateways, edging and banding around a paved drive, and courtyards where the finish has to suit an old building.
Large patios and rebuilt steps are the main rear-garden work: enlarging a terrace, correcting inconsistent step rises that have become a trip hazard, and rebuilding sleeper or masonry-supported level changes on sloping plots.
Block paving on the newer Dorridge-side properties, fencing on long garden boundaries where hedges have been removed or thinned, and jet washing on established paving and cobbles that pick up moss under mature trees. Turfing follows most hard landscaping jobs where the lawn edge has changed.

Setts and cobbles laid with consistent joints and lines that hold: edgings, borders, feature bands, drive aprons and paths, quoted as a fixed price and built by a team of at least two.

Retaining walls, raised borders and steps built from timber sleepers: properly founded, fixed and drained, so a sloping garden becomes a level space you actually use.

Driveways, parking areas and paths laid on a compacted sub-base with haunched edge restraints, kiln-dried sand joints and drainage that actually works: fixed price, agreed dates.

Replacement fence lines and new boundaries with posts fixed properly, gravel boards where they are needed and panels running level: fixed price agreed before we start, old fencing taken away.

Green, black-streaked paving brought back to its actual colour, then joints re-sanded or re-pointed where they need it, so the surface is finished rather than just clean.

Mature gardens and old walls are protected, and the site is left clean each day.
Conservation area constraints are the first thing to establish. Where a property sits within the Knowle conservation area or is a listed building, what you can do to a visible frontage: surface material, colour, whether an existing feature can be removed, may be restricted. Guy will flag this at quote stage so you can check with the council before anything is ordered, rather than discovering it afterwards.
Mature trees are the second recurring issue, and Knowle has plenty. Established roots run exactly where people want new paving; some trees are protected by a tree preservation order or by conservation-area status, which limits excavation and pruning. That has to be assessed on site, and sometimes the honest answer is to shift a terrace two metres rather than cut through a root plate.
Old brick walls and buildings dictate levels and detailing. A new patio abutting a historic wall must not trap water against it or bridge a damp course, and hard mortar against soft old brick causes long-term damage. Careful edge detailing and correct falls do more for the building than any surface choice.
Steps and slopes are the last common problem. Many Knowle gardens step down away from the house, often via steps built decades ago with uneven rises. Inconsistent rises are the most common cause of garden trips, so rebuilding to equal rises with a slight forward fall is usually the single most worthwhile safety improvement in an older garden.

Cobbles and setts are slower to lay than large-format paving, so labour is a bigger share of the cost. Guy measures up and gives one fixed written price on around 95% of jobs.
Often yes, but the material and extent can be restricted, and listed buildings have tighter rules. Guy will tell you what looks like it needs checking with Solihull Council before you commit to anything.
It gets assessed on site. Where roots or a preservation order rule out excavation, we usually adjust the position or the construction rather than damage the tree.
Not as a 24-hour service, but urgent items such as storm damage to a fence can often be looked at quickly. Call Guy for a straight answer on timing.
Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs here. Uneven rises are the usual culprit, and rebuilding to equal rises makes an immediate difference.
Where practical, yes. An exact match to weathered stone is rarely possible, so Guy will advise whether blending or a clean deliberate contrast will look better.
Smaller jobs on completion. Larger jobs staged: one payment at the end of the first week and the balance on completion.
