Serving Coventry

Landscaping in Coventry, by a firm based minutes away

Coventry is a twenty-minute run north from the yard in Kenilworth, and a large part of our work comes from the southern and western suburbs: Earlsdon, Stivichall, Green Lane, Canley, Finham, Cheylesmore, Allesley and Eastern Green.

The housing stock is dominated by two eras. First, the 1930s expansion: bay-fronted semis on wide plots with long rear gardens, front gardens big enough to park on, and boundaries shared the full length with neighbours. Second, the post-war rebuild: solid houses on generous plots with open lawns, mature trees and concrete or tarmac drives now well past their service life.

Both create a clear pattern of work. Front gardens converted to proper block paved parking, cracked concrete drives replaced, back gardens given a real terrace instead of a small slab square, worn lawns lifted and re-laid, and long fence lines rebuilt after decades of patching.

Ground conditions across the city are mixed. Plenty of Coventry sits on clay, but there are also gardens on made-up ground, old air-raid and redevelopment fill, and areas where post-war construction left rubble not far below the surface. It is one of the reasons Guy checks what is actually under a garden before pricing rather than assuming.

Services in Coventry

What Coventry gardens usually need

Block paved driveways are the most requested job in the city. Two-car parking on a 1930s or post-war frontage, replacing cracked concrete or a patched tarmac drive, with proper edge restraints and drainage so the surface stays where it is put.

Patios come a close second, usually replacing a small original slab area with a terrace big enough for a table, chairs and a barbecue, in sandstone or porcelain, with a path running down the side of the house to the gate.

Fencing is constant. Long shared boundaries mean posts rotted at ground level, panels twisted by wind, and gravel boards long gone. Turfing follows extension and conservatory work, and jet washing is often the sensible first step where drives and patios are simply filthy rather than failed.

Also available in Coventry: cobblestones, sleeper walls & steps, decking. See all services.

Local conditions

Coventry-specific problems we deal with

Failed driveways are the city's most common complaint, and the cause is nearly always the same: not enough excavation, no proper edge restraint, and no thought given to where surface water goes. Blocks then creep at the edges, ruts form under the wheels and weeds take the joints. Rebuilding to a correct depth with restrained edges fixes it permanently; relaying the same blocks on the same weak base does not.

Drainage rules matter here. A driveway that sheds water straight onto the pavement or highway is not acceptable, so a rebuild has to send water to a permeable surface, a border or a properly formed drainage detail within the property. It is designed in from the start rather than added as an afterthought.

Ground is less predictable in Coventry than in the surrounding villages. Post-war redevelopment left made-up ground and buried rubble in some gardens, and services can sit shallower than expected. Both change the excavation, which is why Guy assesses on site and prices what is really there.

In the older suburbs, mature trees on and near boundaries are a genuine factor: root systems under proposed paving, heavy leaf fall onto north-facing patios that then stay green all winter, and lawns starved of light. Sometimes the honest answer is a different surface or a different position rather than fighting the tree.

What we allow for in Coventry

  • Driveways failing at the edgesMissing edge restraint and a thin base: solved by rebuilding to depth.
  • Surface water onto the highwayDrainage designed into the driveway, not left to run off the front.
  • Made-up ground and buried rubbleChecked on site so excavation is priced for what is actually there.
  • Mature trees and shadeRoots, leaf fall and light levels factored into surface choice and position.
  • Worn shared fence linesPosts renewed properly rather than another panel patched into a rotten line.

Coventry questions

Straight answers for Coventry customers

Do you work in Coventry?

Yes, across the city and especially the south and west: Earlsdon, Stivichall, Finham, Canley, Cheylesmore, Allesley and Eastern Green. We are based in Kenilworth, twenty minutes away.

How soon can you quote for a driveway in Coventry?

Usually same or next day for the visit, with the written quote inside 48 hours. Quotes are free.

How much is a block paved driveway in Coventry?

It depends on the area, the ground beneath it, how much needs breaking out and which blocks you choose. Guy measures up and gives one fixed price in writing; that is how around 95% of our jobs are priced.

Do I need permission to pave my front garden?

The key issue is surface water: a drive must not discharge onto the highway. We design drainage into the build so the water stays on your property, and Guy will flag anything about your specific frontage that needs checking.

Can you just relay my existing blocks?

Sometimes, if the blocks are sound and the base is genuinely intact. More often the base is the reason it failed, and relaying on it only buys a year or two. Guy will tell you which you have got.

Is emergency work available?

We are not a 24-hour service, but urgent items such as a fence down after high winds can often be looked at quickly given how close we are. Give Guy a call.

Do you do work on Coventry rental and multi-let properties?

Yes. Guy quotes the same way for landlords as for homeowners: a fixed written price, and clear timings so tenants can be told in advance.

Who supplies the blocks, stone and timber?

You buy the materials on Guy's advice, which keeps the cost transparent and means no mark-up is added on top.

How do payments work?

Smaller jobs are paid on completion. Larger jobs are staged: one payment at the end of the first week and the balance on completion.

What if there is a problem after the job?

Ring Guy and we come back to put it right.
